Matthew Wade has been appointed as the captain of the 15-player Australian squad, which is scheduled to embark on a five-match T20I series tour of India in November. This tour follows closely after the 2023 World Cup Final, which takes place just four days prior.
Notably, the pace trio of Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc, and Josh Hazlewood, who are part of the ongoing to the versatile duo of Mitchell Marsh and Cameron Green, as they need time to prepare for the upcoming Test summer. Ashton Agar, who is still recovering from a calf injury, was not considered for selection.
On the positive side, Steve Smith and David Warner, who had been absent during the South Africa tour, have made their return to the T20 squad.
The squad comprises the following players: Matthew Wade, Jason Behrendorff, Sean Abbott, Tim David, Nathan Ellis, Travis Head, Josh Inglis, Spencer Johnson, Glenn Maxwell, Tanveer Sangha, Matt Short, Steve Smith, Marcus Stoinis, David Warner, and Adam Zampa.
George Bailey, the chair of the selection panel, commented on the chosen squad, stating, “It’s an experienced group with a blend of players who have previously made their mark on the international stage and promising talents that we anticipate will continue to grow in significance within our T20 team. Matthew, who has previously led the team, is a leader within the squad, and we are eager to see him take charge for this series. Similar to Mitch Marsh’s role in the South Africa series, this presents another valuable opportunity to further strengthen our pool of international leaders and talent.”
Bailey also acknowledged the formidable challenge of facing India on their home turf and noted that most of the squad members have extensive experience playing in India, including eight members from the current ODI World Cup squad, along with Tanveer Sangha, who is presently a traveling reserve.
