The ongoing men’s ODI World Cup 2023 carries significant implications for teams aiming to qualify for the next edition of the Champions Trophy, scheduled to be held in Pakistan in 2025. Teams that secure a top-seven finish during the league phase will earn a spot in the eight-team event, joining the host nation, Pakistan, in the ICC tournament.
Following England’s defeat to India, there was some confusion regarding this rule. While England captain Jos Buttler mentioned it during the post-match presentation, their head coach, Matthew Mott, revealed in a later press conference that they had become aware of the rule just “an hour and a half ago.” Previously, qualification for the tournament was determined through ICC rankings over a certain period.
Mott downplayed the impact of this new rule, saying, “The ICC changes qualification rules quite frequently, and to be honest, I don’t think it will affect our approach to this tournament significantly. It’s not a major concern.” However, he acknowledged that the rule has refocused the team’s efforts and added, “It gives us a lot of focus that we need to make sure we can’t just turn up. We’ve got to turn up, play well, and win those games. We’re facing strong opponents in the upcoming matches, which motivates us to recover and continue giving our best.”
This rule became widely known after Bangladesh’s defeat to the Netherlands. Bangladesh’s captain, Shakib Al Hasan, mentioned that they were keeping it in mind as they prepared for their remaining three matches. With five consecutive defeats since their win over Afghanistan, this rule provides added motivation for teams like Bangladesh, the Netherlands, Sri Lanka, and perhaps even Afghanistan to perform well in the tournament, even if reaching the semi-finals is no longer entirely within their control.
Addressing speculation about discord in the England dressing room following their fifth loss of the World Cup, which left them at the bottom of the points table, Coach Mott dismissed such claims, including those made by England’s 2019 World Cup-winning skipper, Eoin Morgan.
Mott asserted, “No, not really. I don’t think that at all. I think anyone inside our team at the moment would attest that despite our results, we remain a closely-knit unit.” He emphasized the team’s strong camaraderie and unity, even in the face of challenging results, and stated that the players continue to support each other. Mott also noted that it’s easier to maintain such unity when a team is winning, and he expressed his pride in the team’s resilience despite their recent losses.
Regarding Eoin Morgan’s comments, Mott expressed his intention to discuss them with Morgan directly, highlighting their positive relationship. He stated, “Eoin’s entitled to his opinion. He’s obviously been away for a couple of weeks due to the birth of his child and hasn’t been in and around the dressing room. I’ll certainly take that up with him and have a conversation. We have a good rapport with him, so if he’s noticing something I’m not, we’ll address it.”
