In a development for the 2023 World Cup, Angelo Mathews, the seasoned veteran with 221 ODIs under his belt, has bee brought into Sri Lanka’s squad as a replacement for Metheesha Pathirana. The ICC officially announce this change in a press release, attributing Pathirana’s absence to a shoulder injury sustained during a warm-up that ruled him out of the tournament.
This news provides a welcome boost to Sri Lanka, who have encountered a challenging start to the competition, losing three our their four matches and currently occupying the 9th position on the points table. Angelo Mathews was initially part of the squad as a traveling reserve and has been actively participating in practice sessions in Bengaluru, where Sri Lanka is scheduled to face England on Thursday, October 26.
Sri Lanka faced an earlier setback when their captain, Dasun Shanaka, remained sidelined due to thigh injury, continuing his rehabilitation with the team. Subsequently, Chamika Karunaratne was added to the squad. Mathews becomes the second injury replacement in the squad reinforcing Sri Lanka’s efforts in the World Cup.
