Former India captain and spinner bishan bedi, passes away at 77

Former India captain renowned spinner Bishan Singh Bedi passed away in Delhi at the age of 77 after proacted illness.

In the 1970s, Bedi was a member of India’s renowned spin quartet, which also included Bhagwath Chandrasekhar, Erapalli Prasanna, and Srinivas Venkataraghavan. Bedi is regarded as one of the best left-arm spinners ever.

Bedi amassed 1560 wickets in his outstanding first-class career, more than any other cricketer in India. Bedi made his test debut in 1967 against the West Indies. He went on to play for India in 67 tests and ten ODIs before making his final apperance in 1979 against England at the Oval.

Bedi was a member of the team that gave India their first victory in the format despite only taking seven ODI wickets. In the 1975 World Cup match against East Africa, Bedi recorded incredible stats of 12-8-6-1 to help bowl out the opposition for just 120, leading to the victory.

Bedi led the national team in 22 games and finished with 266 wickets in tests, including 14 five-wicket hauls. The left-arm spinner also played very well for Northamptonshire in country cricket, and he helped Delhi win the Ranji Trophy in 1979 and 1980.
