In a rain-affected warm-up match between South Africa and New Zealand, the Proteas’ wicketkeeper-batsman, Quinton de Kock, showcased his prowess with the bat, but it was the Kiwis who emerged victorious under the Duckworth-Lewis method at the Greenfield International Stadium in Thiruvananthapuram.
The warm-up match, which was originally scheduled for a full 50-over contest, was reduced to a 35-over per side affair due to persistent rain delays. After winning the toss and electing to bat, South Africa posted a respectable total of 213/5 in their allotted overs, largely thanks to an explosive innings from Quinton de Kock. De Kock’s blazing knock of 96 runs off just 68 deliveries was the highlight of South Africa’s innings. His elegant strokeplay and ability to find gaps consistently kept the New Zealand bowlers on their toes.
However, the rain gods intervened once again, and New Zealand’s target was adjusted to 166 runs from 20 overs according to the Duckworth-Lewis method. New Zealand chased down the revised target with three balls to spare, finishing on 167/5. Opener Tom Latham led the Kiwi charge with a well-compiled 68 runs off 49 balls.
While the result favored New Zealand, the match served as valuable preparation for both teams ahead of the upcoming series. South Africa would take positives from de Kock’s form and a competitive showing despite the weather disruptions, while New Zealand would be pleased with their successful run chase under challenging conditions.
Both teams will be looking to fine-tune their skills and strategies as they gear up for the upcoming series, which promises to deliver thrilling cricketing action. Cricket fans eagerly await the start of the series, hoping for exciting matches and standout performances from their favorite players.
